Module

This blog supports and materialises the development process of a new 12 week Digital Architecture and Fabrication module at the University of Nottingham. It is a common place for students to source information discussed during studio and seminar tutorials. Individual student blogs are linked to this page and together they form a small cohort of designers and researchers investigating architecture through advanced technology.

How to write a Final Report

Submission on the 10th Jan 2011 will be a critical synthesis that concludes Assignment 1 and Assignment 2 in a Final Report. The research report will demonstrate how the facade workshop and case study informed the design development of your studio project.
Final Report Criterion
  • Present an exceptionally clear argument.
  • Integrate a range of materials and information sources with a logical structure.
  • Provide a depth of insight into theoretical and technological issues and display analytical rigour.
  • Display originality of treatment and exposition.
  • Present perceptive conclusions.

Introduction
  • Define your particular digital architectural and fabrication investigation.
  • Outline the significance of this investigation, its objective and the research contribution to your studio project.

Literature review
  • Place your particular investigation within an architectural research and design context.
  • Present a historical time line of the development on your particular investigation.
  • Refer to key-researchers, vital developments and breakthroughs.
  • Outline the digital design and fabrication process necessary to achieve your particular investigation of architecture.
  • Refer to any organizations, academic research, conferences and manufacturers that relate to your particular investigation

Discussion (develop critical arguments)
  • Discuss how your investigation addresses the structural, constructional, environmental, social, economic and cultural aspects of digital architectural design.
  • Demonstrate the potential capacities of this investigation for architectural applications, any current problems and inspirations for architectural design.
  • Make comparative references to conventional architectural methods.

Analysis (use case studies to test your critical arguments)
  • Justify why you have selected each case study and explain its capacities relative to your investigation.
  • Consider the strategic decision making behind each precedent case study.
  • Architectural performance of each case study. Was it successful? What are the architectural problem solving issues? What conclusions can be drawn?
  • Use your precedent case studies to consider the dilemmas and compromises that architects face when they carry out a similar investigation to achieve their architectural ambitions.

Evaluations (use tabulations and/or diagrammatic visualisations)
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of your investigation and its application to architectural problem solving.
  • Rethink how successful digital design and making tools develop the architecture discipline. Consider the limitations and drawbacks that might occur due to misleading use of technology such as: the Technology Polarism or Abusing Technologies.

Conclusions
  • Discuss how appropriate is it to adopt this particular investigation for the design of you studio project. What improvements could be further explored in your studio design?
  • Suggest how the application of this research investigation can contribute to future research and development of digital architectural and fabrication methodologies.
